Happy? Expat life worldwide + closer look on China
This year marks the tenth anniversary of one of the world’s largest surveys on living and working abroad: the Expat Insider survey by InterNations. More than 12,000 expats worldwide, representing 171 nationalities and living in 172 countries or territories, have once again shared their opinions on everyday life abroad. Closer look on China
Expat life in China is very affordable, but getting a visa or opening a local bank account can be really tough
China ranks 26th out of 53 destinations in the Expat Insider 2023 survey. Ranking 10th for Personal Finance, the country is a great place for expats who want their money to go a long way. Another highlight is the widely available (5th) and easily affordable (2nd) public transportation network.
On the downside, the country ranks 48th in the Work Culture and Satisfaction Subcategory. The majority of expats is unhappy with their work-life balance (45th). The Expat Essentials (50th), such as administrative topics or digital infrastructure, are another source of disappointment. All things considered, 74% are happy with their life in China, close to the global average of 72%.
