How China Innovates: The natural ecosystem and its limits explained

14 October 2022; 11:30-12:30 (CET)
Online (english)
Organizer: Table.China (Table Media)

Subject: What are the elements explaining China's extraordinary economic development? Surely, the centralized planning of the government cannot be solely responsible for China's innovation progress. The academic study "Demystifying China's Innovation Machine" describes it as a complex, interdependent ecosystem and concludes that the future success of China’s innovation will depend on continuing policy pragmatism, mass entrepreneurship and innovation, and the development of the "new infrastructures".

What is the assessment of the current innovation potential in China—with a central committee seeking more control over the population and an economy continuously weakened by zero-covid lockdowns?

Discussion:

David M. Gann (Professor at Oxford University; Co-Author of "Demystifying China's innovation machine"), Jeroen Groenewegen-Lau (Head of Program "Science, Technology and Innovation" at Mercator Institute for Chinese Studies);
Moderator: Finn Mayer-Kuckuk (Editor in Chief, China.Table)
